The design of Waiwhakareke Heritage Park represented a rare opportunity to integrate a significant ecological restoration project within the environmental, promotional, planning and development strategies of Hamilton City. In 2003 Mansergh Graham were engaged by Council to assist in the creation of a key ecological hub within the city. The approach taken was to provide, not only for the well being of the flora and fauna that will live within the park, but also for the well being of the city's residents and visitors, through the educational opportunities and amenity values it will provide.
Ecological viability and the need to meet the desires and aspirations of the community were key factors in the development of the overview concept for the park. The concept delivers an accessible natural resource within the city, and provides for the reintroduction of plants and animals that no longer inhabit the area.
Key components of the concept include the creation of an eco centre, in association with Hamilton Zoo, to act as the main entrance to the park, a tourist destination in its own right; the reintroduction of indigenous flora and fauna to the site made possible by the use of predator proof fencing to enclose the site; the development of a publicly accessible walkway network within the site and a cycleway around its perimeter; and the creation of active recreation space for the local community.
The project included:
- Liaison with key community and interest groups.
- Development of an ecologically appropriate restoration strategy.
- Preliminary budget estimates for a 20 year implementation period.
- Preliminary schedule of plant quantities.
- Conceptual design of site furniture and facilities.
- Presentation of the concept to Council for funding.
- Input into reserves management plan.
